Dr. Mathis completed an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Duke University, and a medical degree from University of Michigan. At the University of Michigan, he then completed an anesthesiology residency followed by a cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship and NIH T32 research fellowship. Dr. Mathis now serves as an Assistant Professor within the Cardiac Division of the University of Michigan anesthesiology department, as well as the Director for Cardiac Anesthesiology Research.
Dr. Mathis’s primary research interest pertains to perioperative management of patients with advanced heart failure, using clinical informatics approaches to study large arrays of electronic health record data. He is currently pursuing data science techniques to identify patients with heart failure and guide subsequent perioperative management. Data science interests of Dr. Mathis include natural language processing of the written medical record, analyses of intraoperative physiologic waveforms, and clinical decision support for anesthesia providers including automated alerts. He is currently supported by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and departmental funding.
