Michael Sjoding

Dr. Sjoding received a degree in Biochemistry from Valparaiso University in Indiana, and a medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Chicago, followed by a year as chief medical resident at Advocate Christ Hospital. He completed fellowship in Pulmonary-Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Sjoding’s primary research focus is in how best to first measure and then improve the quality of hospital care, with a particular focus on intended and unintended consequences of current quality measurement programs. He also uses high-dimensional clinical data to advance understanding of the epidemiology and natural history of critical illness, to both understand and improve critical care delivery. Methodologically, this work employs the use of detailed clinical and large-scale administrative databases, multi-level statistical modeling, causal analysis, and simulation. His work is supported by the NIH/NHLBI T32 multidisciplinary training program in lung disease.
